MONTESOL HOTEL
Ibiza’s premier Hotel
The Montesol, originally known as the Gran Hotel Ibiza, was built at the beginning of the 1930’s by the master builder Joan Gómez Ripoll. Situated on the Vara de Rey boulevard, and built in the colonial style, apart from being the first hotel on the island, it is characterised by its grandeur and luxury.
The hotel first opened its doors on June 4th 1933 just as the nascent tourist industry began to establish itself on Ibiza. Its location, on the edge of the harbour, was ideal for hosting the first tourists who arrived.
Between 1936 and 1945 the hotel was in military use, and shortly thereafter, due to the surge in tourism and a new company coming to get the hotel off the ground, this time under the name of the Hotel Ibiza, which started to attract national and overseas press publicity, and cinema and theatre advertising, (including the Liceo Theatre in Barcelona).
It was at this time that the first package holidays were introduced, offering the island’s varied attractions. Full board prices varied between 55 and 65 pesetas, and an eight day stay used to cost approximately 582 pesetas. In the 1950’s The Hotel Ibiza’s guests represented approximately a quarter of all the islands hotel occupancy.
In 1958 it came to be known as the Hotel Montesol and in 2002 it was declared a Property of Cultural Interest, and currently its cafeteria continues to be the rendezvous point of all the island’s visitors.
